# Upload media (/docs/api-reference/whatsapp/uploadWhatsappMedia)

> Upload an image or a document, then send it by its media_id on sendWhatsappMessage. Uploading costs nothing; only the send is charged. The media_id works for 24 hours and only for the number and type it was uploaded for.

> **Set up WhatsApp first.** Connect a WhatsApp number in the dashboard or with [Connect numbers](/docs/api-reference/whatsapp/importWhatsappNumbers). Included on every paid plan. [See plans](https://omnidim.io/pricing).

**POST** `/whatsapp/media`

Upload an image or a document, then send it by its `media_id` on
`sendWhatsappMessage`. Uploading costs nothing; only the send is
charged. The `media_id` works for 24 hours and only for the number and
type it was uploaded for.

Images can be JPEG, PNG or WebP up to 5 MB. Documents can be PDF, DOCX,
XLSX or plain text up to 16 MB. The file's type is read from its bytes,
not its name.
